Cape Verde Ocean Week: Combatting plastic pollution

Cape Verde is offering public and private institutions, associations, and NGOs the chance to sponsor its beaches and combat plastic pollution, as announced by the Ministry of the Sea.

This initiative, known as the "Godparents of the Sea" project, encourages entities to support the preservation of Cape Verde's 145 bathing beaches. They commit to year-round beach cleaning and conservation efforts, with their work recognized during Cape Verde Ocean Week.

Sponsors also gain visibility in environmental matters and preferential access to beach activities. This project aims to combat plastic pollution, which annually sees eight million tons of plastic enter the oceans, resulting in the deaths of over 100,000 marine animals, as per UN data cited in the regulation.

Studies reveal that for every kilogram of seaweed and plankton in the oceans, there are at least six kilograms of plastic.
